Early Development Centre

Designed for the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nations community, this childcare facility thoughtfully balances two distinct yet complementary environments tailored to different stages of early childhood development. The design concept celebrates growth, discovery, and potential through nature-inspired themes that resonate throughout the spaces.

The daycare room, designed for ages 3 months to 3 years old draws inspiration from the transformative journey of a butterfly, symbolizing emergence, transformation, and development. Warm wood tones are paired with vibrant pops of yellow, creating an uplifting and nurturing environment that encourages curiosity and exploration. Thoughtfully integrated millwork, playful details, and child-scaled spaces support young learners as they begin their journey of growth and discovery.

In contrast, the preschool designed for ages 3-6 years old, embraces the concept of taking flight. Inspired by the freedom and confidence that come with new experiences, the space incorporates calming blues and touches of green to evoke the sky, water, and surrounding natural landscape. Open, flexible learning environments foster creativity, independence, and imagination while encouraging children to spread their wings and explore the world around them.

Together, the two environments create a cohesive facility that reflects the progression of childhood development - from transformation to flight - while providing a welcoming, inspiring, and culturally meaningful place for the community's youngest members to learn, play, and thrive.
